I did not want to wait for five years for the free dogs that some organizations offer visually impaired people. I want to know if there are any personal trainers or companies that would train your own dog to become a service/guide dog.

Childhood is when blind children should be learning orientation and mobility skills with a cane. A blind person must first have a good foundation in orientation and mobility in order to work effectively with a guide dog. Guide dogs aren’t Lassie. A guide dog provides information to its handler about the environment, but ultimately the handler must make the decisions about where to go. You should be working with your school system to make sure that your child is getting the proper skills training. If your school is refusing, I suggest contacting your local chapter of the National Organization of Parents of Blind Children http://www.gopbc.org/ They’ll help you fight for what your child needs and get you in contact with people who can serve as mentors and role models for your child.

When your child is older, he or she may wish to apply to Southeastern Guide Dogs (the program closest to you) http://www.guidedogs.org/

I am looking into getting a guide dog for training but I’m trying to price out a year’s worth of supplies and do all my homework before I approach my parents with the idea So how many cups of dog food (just dry food) would be in a pound? Thanks!

It depends on the specific food. For example, there are fewer cups of ProPlan when you use the formula that has chunks than when you use the old formula. But that’s not really going to help you estimate cost because each dog is going to eat a different amount. I have one that eats 8 cups per day and another that eats only 3 cups per day. They are the same breed and have the same amount of exercise. They just have different metabolisms.

Ask the program you want to work with what is involved with puppy raising. They should be able to answer all your questions. They will also probably require that he be fed a specific food, and usually one of the premium ones. Some guide dog programs will cover some or even all of the costs. Others don’t cover any.

Meanwhile, here’s a good article on estimating the annual cost of dog ownership: http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=2+1671&aid=1543

ETA: "a pint’s a pound" applies to water, not to everything, so the person who said 8 oz to the cup is way off. (Kibble weighs less than water.)

Think of it this way. How many cups in a pound of feathers compared to a pound of lead? Or which weighs more, a cup of feathers or a cup of lead? Obviously they aren’t the same.

We have a deaf blind puppy and we are looking at getting him another dog to act like a guide dog for him has anyone done this? if so how did you go about the training?

yes, there have been many people with dogs who learn to guide another dog with a disability. i have not personally done this, but i know it can be done. you might want to get a second dog and train him the way a seeing eye dog for a person is trained (see below) and work from there. maybe if your puppy bonded with a new dog, it would take it’s course all by itself. (i know this sounds like "wait and see" advice but there aren’t websites dedicated to this problem sadly)

Two days ago, my wife and I got a puppy. She’s a Cocker Spaniel/Terrier mix. She’s about 8 to 10 weeks old.

I was wondering if anyone knows of a step-by-step guide to training her. Firstly, the basics of course: potty training, whining, chewing, etc.
Secondly, commands and the like.

I have found some websites but I would LOVE to find something that basically encompasses all the basics and in what order I should teach her these things.
Pretty much a puppy-owner’s starter guide.

If anyone has anything that can help, that would be greatly appreciated.

Also, before anyone suggests it, I have visited best-dog-training.com but haven’t really found much.

How to Raise a Puppy You Can Live With by Rutherford and Neil is a good book for first time puppy owners. Also a good puppy training class will be helpful too as you will have an instructor and mentor to help you through the rough spots that a book won’t be able to help you do.
