Why does it cost that much to train a guide dog?

I heard on the news that it cost’s fifty grand to train a guide dog!! Where does all the money go??? Why so much??????
Nah i know the blind person doesn’t have to pay! I mean the government or whoever.

Guide dogs undergo extremely specialized training for their jobs. This type of training cannot be taught by your average dog trainer, which is why organizations specifically set up to train guide dogs exist. There is the cost of breeding, vet care, food, supplies, training, etc. Guide dogs must pass very strict temperament and health tests in order to make it into the training program to work towards becoming a guide dog.

Usually, the cost to the blind or visually impaired applicant is minimal due to grants or donations to the agency training the dog. Contrary to what some may think, tax payer’s money is not used to train guide dogs.

Guide dogs are only one type of service dog. Other types of service dogs help the deaf, those with seizures or mobility impairments, etc. Generally, dogs that are trained for tasks other than hearing alerts or guiding are not able to be given to the disabled person free of charge. Each program has its own policies, but because dogs for the deaf and blind/visually impaired have been around longer, people are most familiar with them and more willing to donate money to those organizations to offset the costs involved to the disabled handler.

Why Dog Training is So Important

Dog training helps dogs to fit into their family home in a much better way. Dogs feel much more comfortable with a stable structure to their family life. Because they are descended from wolves, dogs have the same pack mentality as their ancient wolf cousins. They look up to a leader to guide them. Believe it or not, most people also live their family lives under such conditions. This is why dogs and humans are so well suited to live and get on together.

All types of dogs are suitable for dog training. Different breeds are more suited to different types of training. And different breeds fit in well in different types of households. Most people would not like to have a fierce Rottweiler around, but some people do. Some prefer poodles or Pomeranians. Different breeds of dogs are better able to become guide dogs and hearing dogs. While other dogs make good guard dogs. But almost any type of dog can be trained to fit into a loving family home.

Dogs can be amazingly helpful in our working lives as well as our family homes. Already mentioned are the wonderful guide dogs for the blind, but now we even help dogs who help hearing-impaired people. They can hear a door bell, or a telephone ring, or more importantly, a smoke alarm and they can alert their owners to the sounds. Dogs have been known to be able to reach people after an avalanche and bring much needed supplies.

It is usually more useful to choose younger puppies if they are to do one of the more specialized jobs. Usually, younger dogs are more eager to learn because they see it as more fun. They can get used to a new owner better and pick up their training more quickly. With an older dog who is much more set in its ways, you could probably train it new tricks, but it would take much longer with many more repetitions.

It sounds easy doesn’t it? Training a dog takes a lot of hard work. A firm voice should always be used so that the dog knows exactly what you want it to do. When it does something right you can reward it A reward can be a doggy biscuit, or a play with his favorite toy. Another good way to reward a dog is to pat him on his head and say ‘Good Dog’ in a really happy voice. They are surprisingly receptive to your tone!

When your dog does not do the right thing, however, you must not punish him. Your dog will not understand why he is being punished and will only become confused. The best method of training is to use positive reinforcement – that is to reward the good behavior and ignore the bad.

Who knows what a dog could be trained to do. Some dogs can fetch sticks, sit up and beg, roll over. I knew a dog who’s owner would put a coin in its mouth and send it to get the evening paper. Now that’s what I call useful!

I am looking into training a worker or guide dog? Do you have any suggestions to where I could look?

I am very interested in animal care. I am still young and I would like to get into community service with animals. I looked at a few websites and I need more options. So, if you have any options please share them. Thank you.

Jumping right into training a guide dog will be hard.

I suggest volunteering with your local no kill shelter. They will have programs where they need a volunteer to walk and train one of their "program" dogs and some will train you to train.

Take a look at your local breed or type specific private rescue groups and offer your services to them.

Apply for jobs at kennels, trainers, and vets in your area. They will most likely start you at only cleaning stalls but don’t let that discourage because if you are truly interested in training dogs you’ll be cleaning kennels the rest of your life on a daily basis. You can skip a day or two of training but you can never skip a day of cleaning and feeding.

Read, read , and read some more then put it in practice.

Watch. Go to your local dog park without your dog. Just sit and watch the dogs behaviors. Notice the way the stand, the way their ears cock and bodies tighten and loosen. Watch how they interact and begin to notice the signs that their bodies give.

Most of all though stay calm, have more patience than they do and never let them win.

House Training an Adult Dog

There is new evidence everyday that points to the soothing effects of pet ownership. Many studies have shown that you can actually lower your blood pressure simply by petting a cat or dog. If you have kids a dog or cat can help them learn responsibility and help them learn to care about the needs of others as well as their own. But if your adult dog makes frequent messes in the house that can create an enormous amount of stress. How can you stop their bad habits? Is house training an adult dog possible?

There are a few things about dogs that are important to remember. For one thing, dogs are very clean by nature. They are den animals and don’t like to soil their den. They will try very hard to not relieve themselves near their bed, food or water. Dogs are also very intelligent. Most of them can be easily trained. They really do love you and want to please you. It’s just a matter of finding the right way to ‘communicate’ with your best friend so house training an adult dog can be frustration and confusion free.

House training an adult dog may not even be about a lack of training. If you have an un- neutered or un- spayed dog the urinating in the house could be more an element of marking their territory than lack of training. This is especially likely if you have a male dog, more than one dog in the household and your dog isn’t neutered.

Obviously the first thing you should try is to get your dog spayed or neutered. This will very likely take care of the problem right away since neutered and spayed dogs are less interested in marketing their territory. This may be all the house training you need.

If the dog has been marking it’s territory for a fairly long time getting them ‘fixed’ may not help right away. The marking behavior may have become more of a habit and it might take a little more effort to get them to break that habit.

Clean the spots they have marked with a non ammonia solution. Ammonia smells like pee and might encourage them to re-mark the spot. Once the spot has been cleaned put their food bowl there. This will make that area seem like their den and they will be unwilling to soil it.

This should stop the territory marking habit fairly quickly. If you want more tips on house training an adult dog you should get a copy of ‘The Ultimate House Training Guide’. Written by a dog trainer with the assistance of veterinarians this guide can make house training an adult dog much easier.

You and your dog share a very wonderful and unique bond. Don’t let bad habits ruin the time you spend together. House training an adult dog is easy if you have the right tools and know what to do and what not to do.

I want to train a guide dog?

How do I get involved?
I WANT ANSWERS! PLEASE?!

Shiloh, why don’t you become a puppy raiser for the guide dog organizations. This means this puppy is with you 24/7. Where you go, the puppy goes and I mean everywhere, no exceptions. You go to the store, puppy comes to the store. You want to go out to eat, puppy comes with you. They will be attached at the hip! You will have the puppy until they are 18 months old. There are meetings to go through too.
