One of the most commonly held beliefs about dogs is that they are quite literally born to obey their respective masters – be they male or female. That’s why we all collectively consider dogs to be mans best friend. Obedience is not necessarily something that comes naturally to dogs and to be honest often has to be trained into them with compassion and patience. Your dog needs to learn how to obey commands so they know how to behave around your home, people and of course other dogs and animals.
Obedience training in dogs is to allow you to “control” the dog. Remember dogs think and act with a pack instinct to a certain extent and this type of training is vital so that the dog knows who the master is in your relationship. In effect you’ll become the Alpha male of this particular small “pack”.
The methods used to achieve this final goal vary from one trainer to the next but the ultimate goal is the same – the dog has to obey their master; it’s to the benefit of all involved.
So what actually makes a dog obey their master? They (dogs) don’t think the same way as humans do and don’t understand our spoken language as such. So what are the core techniques to making a dog obey you? It’s quite simple really… you need to train your dog in a consistent and compassionate manner and they’ll respond. And you thought it was going to be rocket science eh?
Having a consistent approach in your training is critical. Dogs don’t think logically as humans do. You need to be consistent in showing your dog what behaviors you appreciate and those that you don’t. This way it can become more “instinctual” for the dog and they’ll quite happily obey you and your dog/owner relationship can truly blossom.
Compassion is equally important. Even the smartest dog will take time to learn new commands from you. If your canine buddy doesn’t instantly respond to a new commmand then don’t scold, slap or shout at him or her. Your dog needs to trust you for your training to be truly effective and let’s face facts nobody likes getting yelled at – dogs are the same in this regard.
Your dog is willing to obey you but he’s going to take time to learn the ropes. Be patient, compassionate and consistent in your approach and you’re already 50% of the way to success.

Your Dog and Training is Easier Than You Think!
Your dog’s behavior is a reflection of you
A dog is as good as its owner has taught it.
Family friends of mine have a German Shepherd and as they are an elderly couple they weren’t quite so inclined to train their dog when it was young.
After a while of disobedience they decided to take this dog to a dog training school but as would be expected from a dog that has never had any training from a puppy the dog didn’t like the training school.
The easy solution was to discontinue the training and hope for the best.
Unfortunately the best will never come from a dog that has not been trained and will not respond to any of their requests.
They were disappointed with their pet and assumed that it was because it had a poor personality.
Little did they know that having spent some time on this dog when it was a puppy would have given them a pet that they would have enjoyed a whole lot more and they would have had an obedient dog that they would have been happy to take anywhere without fear of it running away and causing trouble.
German Shepherds are intelligent dogs and this dog has been quite bored for most of it’s life as it hasn’t got any purpose in life and will not listen to any commands.
After seeing the dog become somewhat depressed I started to retrain it to improve the life of both the dog and it’s owners.
Progress has been very rapid as the dog is happy it has some new challenges and loves the attention and rewards that it gets on a regular basis now.
It is a lot more sociable and is easier to manage when out in public.
The owners are a lot happier and so is the dog.
It just seems a shame that they didn’t persevere so much earlier in the dog’s life and they all would have enjoyed many more years of fun and entertainment.

You have just got a new dog, and you would like to train it on your own. However, maybe you haven’t trained a dog before or have had problems in the past training other dogs, so you ask for advice on training equipment or aids. Something that may be suggested to you is that you use an electronic dog collar.
Before you go out and purchase an electronic dog collar, you ought to know what they are and how they work. There are several different kinds of electronic dog collars, and they are used for two main purposes:
1. Controlling barking
2. Containment of a dog
Most dogs bark to a greater or lesser extent. However, how much they bark depends on what kind of breed they are. It is a fact that some dog breeds were specifically designed to be quieter than others. Whilst it is true breeds that were originally bred to guard or keep watch tend to be the dog breeds with a tendency to bark, although this is not an absolute rule.
These dog breeds include: Terriers, Schnauzers, Poodles, Pekinese, Chihuahua, Sheep Dogs, Lhasa Apso, Maltese, Dachshund, Irish Setters, and Pugs. Owners may find that some types of dog breeds are less likely to bark. These include Bloodhounds, Golden Retrievers, Newfoundlands, Rottweilers, Boxers, Malamutes, Saint Bernard, Bulldogs, or Afghans. When considering traits such as barking, new owners often fail to consider both training and dog breed when selecting a dog.
So, dog owners who do want too much barking, or who are worried about the neighbours might consider purchasing an electronic dog collar.
The main purpose of the electronic dog collar is to stop a dog from barking. There are two main ways this is achieved:
Firstly, sensors in the dog collar can tell when the dog is barking, and each time that the dog barks, the electronic dog collar emits an ultrasonic noise that dogs can hear but not humans, thus making them stop barking.
The second version of this collar works in a slightly different way, when your dog barks, a spray of citronella, which is both painless and harmless, is released and surprises your dog. The element of surprise is enough to interrupt the dog in mid bark. In a short time, most dogs learns to keep quiet while wearing the collar.
It is generally accepted that there is no traumatising sensation, or unwanted side effects on the dog or his sense of smell. If you want your dog to express himself as before (to guard the house, when you’re staying away or at night, etc) all you have to do is remove the collar.
Another type of electronic dog collar which I would not recommend requires owners to have an electronic fence installed in their garden. Although there are packages that allow you to do this yourself, it can get complicated, so unless you have experience doing that, hire a professional to install it.
Electronic fences are invisible fences that restrain a dog from leaving the property. They have the benefit of being invisible for those people that don’t like the look of fences. When a dog wears an electronic dog collar and goes too close to the outside parameters of the electronic fence, the dog is met by an electric shock.
There are two ways that electronic dog collars are operated, either on their own, or by a remote that is directed at the collar by the owner. These kinds of collars may seem to have been useful in training dogs, but as they involve electric shocks being emitted I do believe they should be used by responsible owners. Although the electric shock they receive is not large, there are still alternatives to teaching a dog not to do something, such as distracting with a noise, such as shaking or dropping an empty plastic bottle half filled with stones.
In summary you should enjoy building a relationship with your dog through training and avoid anything like electric fences that may harm them or make your pet wary or nervous.

Companion animals are generally kept indoors except for walks and traveling. Thus their training usually includes some form of housebreaking and a set of manners. These manners generally include such things as staying off the furniture, not barking indoors, not begging for food at the dinner table and not drinking from the toilet.
Many companion animals are taught two different sets of rules for different situations, such as the ‘kiss-no kiss’ commands which tell the animal whether it is appropriate to lick or not.(Particularly useful if your dog has a habit of drinking from the toilet.) Companion animals range in all shapes, sizes and breeds but again consider your choices wisely according to your lifestyle.
What do we mean? For instance, a hyper or energetic household might choose a pet that likes a lot of activity and socialization, perhaps a Dalmatian or similar breed. An older person who just wants quiet companionship and something to care for might choose a small dog, such as a Dachshund or Pomeranian. A young gentleman who likes to jog in the evenings might choose a large protective dog like a Mastiff or Doberman Pinscher.
A young lady might choose a German Shepherd or a Husky for their protective qualities and beautiful appearance. A family with young children might lean towards the more nurturing breeds like Saint Bernards or Sheep dogs. All of these breeds have their own niches in the dog-human relationship. Choosing the right breed for your lifestyle should be a careful decision with a lot of thought and research and you can be guaranteed happiness with your choice for years to come.
Dogs trained for hunting should retain some of the more aggressive behaviors but in companion animals this is not necessary, except in the case of dogs kept for protection. A less aggressive animal is much to be desired as a companion and will provide years of stolid companionship, rather than fighting and suffering, sometimes fatal, injuries. Some owners have their animals neutered as a way to curb aggressive tendencies, as well as controlling the stray pet population and decreasing roaming behaviors.
This is a suggestion to seriously ponder as many thousands of unwanted animals are euthanized every year but, by the same token, if something ever happens to your pet it might be comforting to have a pup from the same bloodline. While neutering has its benefits, first be sure that you do not wish to ever breed the dog.
Another difference in the training of companion animals is what most people refer to as pet tricks. We have all seen the dog that will hold a treat on the end of its nose until given the okay and then flip the morsel in the air and snap it up or the dog that plays Frisbee on the beach. These are learned behaviors that take much patience and consistent training. Thus, they are usually reserved for companion animals that are in our contact more often than not. In my years of being a pet owner and visiting with other pet owners and trainers, I have seen all manner of pet tricks, some ranging from just plain dumb to pretty awesome.
On the dumb side, I have seen dogs that will drink beer and then howl in tune to old blues records for hours on end. On the awesome side, I have seen dogs that will climb to the top of a high dive and jump right off with no fear whatsoever. (It scared me though as it looked like one heck of a belly buster.) These tricks are all the brainchild of some pet owner who said I wonder if Fido can learn this. So if you are acquiring a companion animal, start thinking. Find some new pet trick to amaze your friends and neighbors. Maybe you will have the first Chihuahua on the block that can fetch you a cold beer and the remote control on Super Bowl Sunday.

So, you bring home your beautiful dog (or puppy) from the shop, pound or kennels and now it needs training. Where on Earth do you begin? Of course, there are plenty of books out there written about dog training and dog obedience. What we have done in this article is distilled all those tips into seven basic tips how to train your dog. They are:
Be Your Dogs Leader. Be consistent. Dogs are pack animals by instinct. In the wild they live and hunt in packs. Indeed, in some parts of the world, feral dogs are a nuisance and guess what? When they go feral, go wild, they revert back to their pack instinct. So you need to be your dogs pack leader. To say, show who is boss would be an over simplification as most experts believe it is all about consistency, be consistent when enforcing rules and regulations. Expect your dog to push the boundaries and that is when you need to establish yourself as who is in charge. Earn your dogs respect by being firm but fair. Do not use violence to establish your rules, instead use positive reinforcement techniques.
Maintain Eye Contact. When you are training your dog it is important to maintain eye contact. Dogs look to the eyes for cues in leadership. This is also a useful tactic when out walking, if you look into the dogs eyes when giving instruction, he or she will see you more as the leader.
Teach Your Dog To Heel. This is one of the first things you need to establish. You can either use the short or long leash method but either way, it is important to reward positive behaviour i.e. when your dog follows your command to heel. Once this command is mastered you will find that you and your dog have a much closer bond, so that is why this is one of the cornerstones of successful dog training.
House Train Your Puppy or Dog. Trust me, you do not want soggy carpets. Dogs quite naturally will keep their living area clean Yes, quite literally, they do not want to poop in their own backyard (or on your carpet). It just needs a bit of consistent (there is that word again) dog training. Reward positive behaviour, scold accidents quickly and do not forget to take your dog for regular walks and toilet breaks, preferably not just in your backyard and of course, always remember to take a plastic bag with you to pick up the mess.
Check Out The Latest Training Aids. The dog training world is now full of very good training aids. Trust me, you do not need to do dog training all by yourself. What with clickers, electronic and chemical training aids, leashes and leads of different varieties, halters, electronic collars, muzzles and treat carriers you are sure to find the dog training aid that is perfect for your needs.
Take Your Dog To The Vet. Simply put, you need to make sure that your dog is healthy and that there are no physical impediments stopping your dog from becoming successfully trained. For example, if your dog has cystitis it will be very difficult for you to stop your dog urinating in unexpected places. What is better than soggy carpets? A preventative trip to the vets of course.
Be Patient. Do Not Use Physical Force. Unless you or someone else is in immediate danger you should not use physical force on your dog. It has been proven that the old stick methods of training simply do not work. Positive reinforcement works much better but of course, you may have to learn the most important attribute of all, your patience.

If you think about it from a dogs point of view, training a dog is a simple process. Each time your dog does the thing you want, you should reward it and when it does not do it right just ignore it. You can teach your dog in a way that they will associate a reward with a gesture or sound. Lets say you give your dog a treat that you have in your hand and say eat every time. Over a period of time your dog will associate the word eat with food and every time you say this word your dog will be expecting he or she will be getting some food.
Positive or negative reinforcement is where you reward your dog for doing something right or when something not so pleasant stops when your dog does something right.
Positive reinforcement is where you praise your dog every time it does something right. So when you say sit and your dog sits you say good dog and give her a treat.
Negative reinforcement is where you have to help your dog first, lets say you say the command sit again and your dog does nothing so you push down on your dogs hind quarters. Then when your dog sits you stop pushing, that is using the negative reinforcement to strengthen the command sit.
To train your dog you must be consistent all the time, its no good letting your dog do something one day and then changing it the next. Your dog will become confused and will not understand.
To get your dog to obey your command every time you say it you need to repeat it in different environments and situations. If you just train your dog in the back garden and then take him or her over the park and say the command your dog might not do it the first couple of times. Tour dog might think that the commands are just for the back garden only. This process is only to be taught after your dog will obey your command in the back garden, not before.
Skinners conditioning is where your dog will repeat something he or she has done and been rewarded for. Lets say you are having a barbeque and your dog comes over and puts her paw on your leg or knee. You might give your dog a piece of chicken or meat you are eating but your dog will then associate this as a good experience and he or she might do this every time you are eating and expect a reward.
