How to communicate with a dog in their own language- dog training dog communication

In no way do I condone pestering a dog in order to make them offer calming signals for you to see. I kissed Kiko on the head in this video to show you something that dogs HATE that is often done to them, not that I want to condone it! ☺
Dogs bite. You should never put your face in a dogs face. Calming signals can be offered when you are standing or sitting, I was very close to Splash at one point in this video because it was hard to fit us in the video screen, and Splash is very comfortable with me being that close to her face. Never lean into a dogs face in order to communicate with them! Its Threatening!

This video is about the secret language of dogs. Some of you might already know about Calming Signals, but the main population that find out about dog training through Television programs might not.

In this video I will show you how you can use your dogs own language to communicate with them. I will also show you how to interpret your dogs language.

Turid Rugaas is an internationally renowned dog trainer who has studied and researched calming signals for over a decade! You can visit her site on calming signals to learn more AND PICK UP ONE OF HER BOOKS AND DVDS on the subject.

I also have to say that Turid Rugaas has the best leash walking book out there. My dog pulls-What do I do?

I am eternally grateful to Turid for giving me the ability to be able to talk with my dogs in their own language.

Here are the main calming signals that I like to use with dogs-

1 Soft Eye Blinks
2 Looking Away
3 Lip Licks
4 Yawning

1- you can use calming signals to calm a dog down and tell them “no worries”
2- You can monitor your dog’s calming signals and if they are doing more than normal you can tell your dog is getting more stressed (calming signals are normal and happen all the time)
3- If you pet your dog and they offer CS that is normal, but Imagine this Scenario- a child pets a dog and it offers lots of CS. Then the dog walks away from the child, and the parent brings the child to the dog again, and the dog offers even more CS and walks away to lie down, then the parent brings the child to pet the dog a third time, and finally the dog is so stressed that it growls, or bites. The parent could have read that the dog did not want to be petted by the child more than that first time if they knew about CS.

    justified in a lot …
justified in a lot of the cases through fear, abuse, poor socialisation, and similar things.. I wish more people would truly study this before getting these animals. I have a third dog right now I pulled her last saturday, three days in shelter and then she was on the euth list cause of resource guarding :( and here at home shes been fine, despite I had to forcefeed her pills (antibiotics URI), not one growl, not one tantrum nothing.. yeah very aggressive dog.* humans… lack of knowledge kills

  2. ravendarknessa Says:

    chem imbalance or …
chem imbalance or just overbreed so its geneticly coded so to say. And yes I know exactly what you mean, but don’t judge all owners, my pittie will do that but she was majorly abused before I got her she was rescued from the street. So find out about the background before, cause I see it and I think thank god mostpeople dont know what this is. and it makes me wonder what she has been through :( sorry to say though most people can’t handle many forms of aggression despite it might even eb

    Now I understand :)
Now I understand :) I can tell if an owner uses punishment to teach a behavior if their dog offers calming signals when the owners says the cue- “sit” tons of lip licks/calming sigs. as the dog sits. its so sad for me to watch this. especially in public when others think the dog looks happy because of their gaping stressed out “grin”.
I do believe true ‘aggression’ is a chemical imbalance in the brain, and that what 99% of people label agg. is normal dog behavior due to its circumstances

  5. ravendarknessa Says:

and if you look at …
and if you look at most aggressive dogs, they will display a WIDE variety and rather frequent calming signals before turning to the growl, and before biting (if they been punished enough to not dare to growl no more), basically they use it as tap outs. Which is why I often say the animals is not aggressive only in distress and its up to us to reteach them trust in a sensible manner. wish more would study it which is why I do love the video you made, people look at youtube more than reading ;)

    oh no bulging eye …
oh no bulging eye is discomfort.. English is only my second language so Im get across wrong at times.. Noselicking is calming/stress depending on how used. THen intensity and frequensy increases its stress and the dog is signaling discomfort. Ahh and I see what you mean with the neurons, I havent studied it which is why I wondered.. my passion is aggression and how to work with that in dogs cause Im so tired of people label an animal aggressive and then PTS when theres such a wide range in it.

  7. kikopup Says:

    If the bulging ‘ …
If the bulging ‘whale eye’ is a calming signal would you consider freezing and stiffening as a calming signal, or a tight closed mouth? I believe it all depends on how you group behaviors. I could totally see it being done. And appeasement behaviors like an arched back or urination?

  8. kikopup Says:

    your theory wouldnt …
your theory wouldnt effect the theory of mirror neurons, because if the dog DOESNT offer calming sigmals, then there would be no Mirror so so speak when the other dog offered the behavior. It would be like me watching a tennis match, my mirror neurons wouldnt fire when people swing the racket, but my brothers would because he plays tennis himself and is passionate about it. I did not study the brain. I just like finding out from other peoples studies. :)

    My chihuahua Kiko …
My chihuahua Kiko has some really freakishly weird calming signals! One being, she will wipe her face with her paw when trying to get closer to Splash eating a bone, or as a greeting. She will even put her paw over her eyes, or put the paw behind her head, like a contortionist! Very unusual, but I have seen a couple other dogs doing it. mainly small dogs.

  11. kikopup Says:

    “not all dogs have …
“not all dogs have them due to their upbringing or lack of it. So even though a dog see’s it it will not always respond with them due to nurture” It would be really cool if you could link me to the scientific data gathered on this theory! I love learning as much as I can from others studies! Cheers for posting. it sounds really interesting.

    Nice Beginner on …
Nice Beginner on Calming Signals. Turid Rugaas gives lectures in the US once or twice a year. Search Google or her Website to locate her schedule in 2010.

You can observe and record different Signals to explore their meanings. For example, in addition to the common 30 signals, there are degrees of lip licking – a quick flick to a full nose wipe, double wink vs. single eye wink, whisker movement, and swallowing, and so on. Try writing down when & what you observe.

  14. misc248 Says:

    Are calming signals …
Are calming signals only used when the dog is trying to tell you to stop something? I have a new puppy (5 months old) that will climb into my lap and sigh or lick it’s lips. This happens even if I do not pet his head or any other sort of stimulus. Just curious.

I’ve noticed these signals work when I use them to calm my dog down. Great video, thanks.

  15. ravendarknessa Says:

    a more frequent …
a more frequent level, I had a former fighting dog that had cero bodylanguage that today actually functions very well with others thanks to relearning her own language. Something you also forgot to mention was an increase in the calming signals, is showing stress instead, a dog that constantly licks its nose turns away head and displays eyewhite and buldge the eye a little might veyr well be preparing for attack. These dogs has usually b een punished when growling and their natural warning has

  16. ravendarknessa Says:

    I have used calming …
I have used calming signals for close to ten years now in working with aggressive dogs and not all dogs have them due to their upbringing or lack of it. So even though a dog see’s it it will not always respond with them due to nurture, not sure how that effects your theory since I have never studied the neurological part of the brain. However I have noticed that once a dog bond with one human, and you go slowly with a well behaved stooge dog you can teach a dog to use the signals on

  17. screamingtoupee Says:

    Wow-this is very …
Wow-this is very interesting. I’m a pretty laid back person and it’s always transfered to dogs around me-I didn’t realize a lot of it may be because I make a lot of these signals without even thinking about it. The dog I had before I got married was soooo laid back-sighed a lot, yawned a lot, all that good stuff-such a character-so laid back and self assured. Funny-our current dogs are always well behaved and calm around me but hyper around my wife-LOL. I’ll have to tell her about this!
