How to train your dog not to pull- Loose Leash Walking

In other words- walking on a loose leash.
This video quickly outines exercises to get your dog walking on a loose leash by your side. Put very basically FIRST you will teach the dog what you want them to do! And secondly, stop reinforcing them when they pull!

I demonstrate the exercise using a clicker, but if you do not have one, you can always use a verbal marker like yes etc. However you will get much faster and reliable results by using the clicker. If you hold the clicker in the same hand as the leash, and keep the treats in the other hand, you will find it easier to manage. Practice holding the leash, clicker, and treats when you do not have the dog attached to the leash yet, so you dont become overwhelmed.

A great book on loose leash walking, or how to stop your dog from pulling is-

My Dog Pulls. What Do I Do? by Turid Rugaas

You can get this book on www.dogwise.com and other places too. Its very short and has lots of pictures.

I would advise against using any forms of positive punishment when teaching any behavior, but especially leash walking, as startling or hurting a dog actually increases their stress hormones in their body causing the dog to be more hyperactive and more likely to become aroused and reactive towards other dogs and people (weather they want to greet them or not).

DO NOT DROP THE LEASH! I showed myself dropping the leash on a street with no cars/danger and another person there. This would happen during an emergency, if you trip or fumble. In no way do I support people who walk with their dogs off leash, you never can tell if a car will backfire, or who knows what, an earthquake etc with frighten your dog, and cause it to run into traffic. If you don’t like holding a leash, simply tie it to your waist like I do with my dogs. However walking in a safe place where dogs are allowed off leash is perfectly acceptable :)

I don’t like the fact that you’re using treats all the time. like i don’t want to give my dog treats every third step i take when I’m out with her! Isn’t there another way to teach them to walk on loose leash?

Well with that mighty fine lookin booty of yours if I were a dog I would always stay at your heel too and NEVER pull on the leash, unless YOU wanted me to.

    I find it so …
I find it so fascinating how dog training enthusiasts seem to fall into two basic camps. It’s probably very similar to their child-rearing beliefs. Kind of like attachment parenting versus those who believe in “cry it out”. I’ve been doing the “click and treat” or “attachment parenting” kind of work with my 10 week old pup and he is showing amazing progress. Just today he learned to bark and shush on cue. We’re working together in a relationship of mutual affection and respect.

    I am having trouble …
I am having trouble walking my dog. Right when it sees the collar or the leash, she will just lay down on her belly and not get up. Even if I tug her a bit, she will just stay down and prefer to get dragged. I have tried using treats but it doesn’t work.If she decides she wants the treat, she will crawl on her belly for about 4 steps after quitting. I thought it was the collar at first so I then bought a harness but it did not help. Can anyone help me with this problem?

i got my dog to …
i got my dog to walk the heel before he was 8 month but with no leash.
i used the tip of a fishing rod to tap him into possition, if to far infront tap on the nose, if to far behind tap on the bum, if to far out tap on the side and if he sniffs the ground tap on the head. by doing this technique ive got my dog walking a heel thats almost militery.
i dont need the rod tip now, he stops when i stop, walks my speed, his nose is never infront of my feet and hes no more than 6 inches from my side.

Thanks for the great tips! My dog is constantly tugging at the leash and barking at people and other dogs, so our walks together can be quite stressful sometimes. I’ll definitely be using this guide to teach her not to pull. I hope it works out. =) Thanks again!

not sure what your trying to say, but yes you can do the same thing without treats, but if you do use treats for 3 weeks, you will make fast progress, and then not have to use treats for the rest of your dogs life. Treats are used to train a new behavior a dog doesn’t know.

  15. kikopup Says:

yes, but Cesar uses Punishment, which I don’t want to use. So treats work better for me. I have to feed my dog anyway, might as well have the dog work for their food instead of giving the dog food for free like Cesar does.
