I'm not in favor of a single book. The simple reason is because no one person knows it all. Use your local library, there isn't any reason that you need to buy all of them that are available. But, it is in your best interest to even read the ones that you disagree with, because contempt prior to investigation only leads to everlasting ignorance.

If you are into videos and are looking for a good one to get a pup started, I like "Sound Beginnings" by Jackie Mertens. But, understand that it is geared to starting a retriever field trial dog.

Ybs also has a video by Connie Cleveland that is absolutely top drawer for the obedience competitor.
References :
breeder trainer exhibitor

I can assume you have looked in the book stores and found a mountain of them! There are so many you can scale it down to what you specifically want to train your doggie to do for you. I myself have a mountain of them and find that most are helpful and have gained much knowledge from a little of all of them. My best bet would be to go first to the library and check out anything they have and start from there. This will give you a good idea of what you are looking for in training. Also the major book stores have a place to sit and read for hours if you have the time and you can then pick out what you really want to buy. Some dog owners will even loan books provided you bring them back.
Happy hunting!
